/ SRI DALADA MALIGAWA /

Sri Dalada Maligawa or the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic is a Buddhist temple in
the city of Kandy. Located in the royal palace complex of the former Kingdom of
Kandy, it houses the relic of the tooth of the Buddha.

Since ancient times, the relic has played an important role in local politics because it
is believed that whoever holds the relic holds the governance of the country.

/ ROYAL BOTANICAL GARDENS, PERADENIYA /

Renowned for its collection of orchids, the garden includes more than 4000 species
of plants, including orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. The origins of the
Gardens date as far back as 1371 when King Wickramabahu III ascended the throne
and kept court at Peradeniya near the Mahaweli river.

/ EMBEKKE DEVALE /

Embekke Devale, famed for its elaborate woodcarvings, pillars and other structures is
nestled about eight miles from Kandy. Built by King Wickrema Bahu II (1371 AD)
during the ‘Gampola period, the devale hosts over 125 series of decorations of
elaborate carvings on wooden pillars.

/ KANDY ESALA PERAHERA /

A historical parade held annually in July or August to pay homage to the Sacred
Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha.

Consisting of many traditional local dances such as fire-dances, whip-dances,
Kandyan dances and various other cultural symbols, it also includes elephants who
are usually adorned with lavish garments.

/ KNUCKLES MOUNTAIN RANGE /

Conservation area that stretches 155 square kilometres, located right in the heart of
Sri Lanka, the area is formed of an impressive array of forests, endemic flora and fauna
and breathtaking mountain scenery.

Characterised for its robed thick layers of cloud, the mountain range consists of 34
peaks, with 5 peaks resembling the shape of a knuckle.
