300-square-hectare water tank built in the fourth century by King Mahasena attracts
herds of wild elephant which gather on its shores regularly – the centrepiece of
Minneriya-Giritale National Park.
It is also an important habitat for sloth bears, chevrotain, varieties of rare birds and is
home to the endemic monkeys of Sri Lanka – the purple-faced languor and the
toque macaque.

Situated around the ancient Kaudulla tank, the national park provides a 6656 hectare
elephant corridor. A popular destination for wildlife safaris the park is home to
leopards, sambar deer and the shy sloth bear.
