1867, James Taylor marked the birth of the tea industry in Ceylon by starting a tea plantation in Kandy. It was not long after that Nuwara Eliya’s climate lent itself to becoming the prime location for tea production but also the sanctuary of the British civil servants and planters in Ceylon.
